derek R. Moen, Associate
Derek hails from the Midwest and is now proud to call the sunny shores of Southern California his home.He joins Crimson Leaf Capital following over 8 years working in the biomedical research and healthcare fields, most recently on the development of a therapy for an ultra-rare pediatric neurodegenerative disorder within the LA Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. As the lead scientist for the project, his work led to a grant valued at over $1.5MM to move the therapy forward with the potential to save lives. Derek is passionate about using disruptive technology to reduce costs and expand access to higher quality care and has a special interest in the field of rare diseases, especially those affecting children. He is excited to build upon his growing knowledge of business development and finance as a member of the Crimson Leaf team in their ongoing search for a successful businessthat has a profound impact in its community. Derek received hisBachelor of Science with High Honors in Neuroscience from The University of Michigan where he also attended the College of Engineering. Outside of his mission to improve healthcare, he was formerly a member of the Los Angeles Aviators professional ultimate team and loves to spread his passion for the sport.
MJ Xu, Associate
MJ’s early education began in Shanghai China where she grew up. She took the opportunity to expand her horizons by moving to the United States for her undergraduate studies, at first in New York, and then in Los Angeles. She received a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from UCLA and then continued her graduate studies receiving a Master of Science in Applied Finance from Pepperdine University. She is soon due to receive her CFA charterholder designation.
MJ’s career path to wealth management, finance and investments is deeply rooted from her degree in applied mathematics. Her degrees are further complimented by her work experience that began with Bank of China and Merrill Lynch, and continued with LPL Financial this past year. She was responsible for leading an intern team to build ten different unique and diversified portfolios by researching the metrics of a large number of mutual funds. Her analysis and individualized client consultations helped her finalize her portfolio recommendations.
MJ is enthusiastically ready to expand her knowledge and experience in the industry by continuing her research in private equity, more specially for the healthcare industry with Crimson Leaf Capital and it’s specialized team members. In addition to her career dedication, MJ also finds time for her personal passions which include adventure traveling, outdoor recreation, and cultural exploration.
SETH J. SPIVACK, ASSOCIATE
Seth J. Spivack is a native of Los Angeles. He is an experienced financial services professional working for boutique investment firms on Wall Street in Manhattan where he gained significant insight into the power of a well-designed cold call. Most recently, he was with Morgan Stanley in Downtown Los Angeles. Seth is an entrepreneurial philanthropist serving on the board of directors for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Youth Foundation. Focusing on fundraising for entities ranging from regional commodity companies to Major League Baseball, Seth specializes in institutional fundraising and brokering corporate partnerships. His mission is to form strong relationships within his investor community and create empowered communities through investment.
Seth looks forward to joining the Crimson Leaf team and sourcing impactful investment opportunities. Seth played baseball for and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with academic honors and a degree in History. He has guest lectured International & Managerial Finance courses for the UCLA Extension program. In his free time, Seth is a passionate brewer who frequently enters beer competitions and enjoys watching hockey games.
Karina Tsang, Associate
Karina is born and raised in Hong Kong. After completing her studies at an international school with students of more than 80 nationalities, she sought experiences abroad and moved to Los Angeles for her undergraduate studies. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Southern California majoring in International Relations Global Business with a double-minor in Economics and Applied Analytics.
In the past few years, Karina has interned in three continents. Her work experiences in the US, Europe and Asia have deepened her understanding of cultural differences embedded in the workplace and business models, and the necessary cultural awareness to communicate with working professionals of different backgrounds. Karina made it her goal to explore her passion and career interests during college. She has worked in the fields of international technology transfer, financial advisory, and emerging technology. Her work experience allows her to meet a wide range of professionals including government officials, virtual reality and artificial intelligence developers, fund managers, and financial advisors. Karina has developed a broad knowledge base of different industries through her diverse work experiences.
